Band and Drums of the Cheshire Constabulary
The Band and Drums of the Cheshire Constabulary have been making music in Cheshire and beyond for over 65 years. The band begun life as the Stockport Borough Police Band back in 1952 and whilst many UK Police bands have faded over the years, we are proud that ours continues to thrive.
Our primary role has always been to foster public relations through music. Since its formation we have performed at literally thousands of events and are still as popular as ever. We are always in demand and our calendar is always full.
On ceremonial occasions we proudly wear the traditional uniform of the British Police service, the band perform at parades, concerts and ceremonial occasions. Since 2010 we have also spread our wings somewhat making self-funded trips to Germany, Austria and Holland.
The Band of the Cheshire Constabulary is a traditional “brass band”.
We are mainly a “concert band” but in 2010 we returned to the competitive arena and over the last 8 years have climbed from being unranked to first section. On that journey we have had the honour of qualifying for the UK National finals on no less than 4 occasions.
Band members come from all walks of life not just the Police and we are always looking for accomplished players to further strengthen the band. If you are interested please do contact us.
The band rehearses once weekly on Mondays 7:30pm at Police HQ Winsford CW3 0HF.
Corps of Drums
We are fortunate for have a fine Corps of drums who lead the band on parade.
In addition they perform with the band at concerts and indeed independently, supporting passing out parades and appearing at fetes and even weddings. The Corps have also supported commemorative events held in Normandy and Ypres and made appearances in military tattoo in Leiden Holland.Popular where ever they go, the members are exceptionally smart and it will come as no surprise that some members have previous distinguished service with HM forces.
The Band has two CDs “in concert” and Concert Music priced at £5 and £7 respectively. The recordings contain music from classics, to film TV and musicals. Both are available for purchase. (Cheques made payable to Cheshire Constabulary Band).
Retired Inspector Dave Woollam, was appointed as Musical Director in June 2007. In many respects it has been a return to his roots as Dave played Tenor Horn with the band as a teenager back in 1975. His father John (who was also a Cheshire Police Officer) introduced him to the band and he never looked back. 15 very happy years followed during which he met his future wife Rachel (who incidentally plays principal Cornet with the band).
He then spent 14 happy and rewarding years at the Robert's Bakery band predominantly on Solo Euphonium followed by two very challenging years as Solo Euphonium with Warrington based Wire Brass. His first experience with the baton was in 2000 as MD of the South Cheshire Based Lions Youth Brass.
In 2010 Dave "retired" as a Police Officer after 30 years service but was pleased to remain as the Musical director of the Band. Always a committed musician he is proud to lead the band and drums.
The band and drums are available for bookings both together and independently. Demand is always high so please book well in advance.
