Tribute to pedestrian who died following collision with a car in Warrington Date published: 12th March 2019 1.54pm

The family of a pensioner who died following a collision outside Warrington Hospital have paid tribute to him.

Francis Melia, from Orford in Warrington, was on his way to attend an appointment at the hospital when the incident took place shortly before 1.45pm on Wednesday 20 February.

The 84-year-old pedestrian was involved in a collision with a white BMW car outside the hospital on Lovely Lane.

He suffered serious head injuries and sadly died at Aintree University Hospital on Wednesday 27 February.

His daughter Sarah Anders said: “Dad was an active and independent 84-year-old man who lived life to the full.

“He leaves behind a wife of 59 years, three daughters, five granddaughters, a grandson and six great-grandchildren, as well as a gaping hole in our hearts.

“He was taken from us so suddenly and unexpectedly and he is sadly missed by us all.”

The driver of the car stopped at the scene following the incident.

Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and no arrests have been made.

Officers want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information or dashcam footage which may aid the investigation.

They are particularly keen to speak to five people who got off the number 16 bus outside the hospital moments before the collision.

Sarah added: “Dad was on his way to the hospital to attend an appointment. He got off a bus outside Houghtons Funeral Directors before attempting to cross the road.

“Were you walking on Lovely Lane, driving on that road or crossing it or simply in the area around the time that the collision occurred?

“If you can help with any information or dashcam footage at all regarding Dad’s last steps or the collision itself it will be greatly appreciated.”

Anyone with information in relation to the incident should call Cheshire Constabulary on 101, quoting IML 327414, give the details via or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
