Police warn local businesses to be vigilant following cold caller incident Date published: 12th October 2018 10.08am

Police are warning businesses in Cheshire to be vigilant following a suspicious cold call to a business in Macclesfield.

On 4 October the company received a call from a man claiming to be called Mark Shepherd from Cheshire Police and asking them to sponsor a company called Prevent by buying advertising space.

The person calling said they were a police officer and that it was their chance to support the work Prevent does going into schools to promote safety of children online by buying an advert which would go inside a publication given out in schools.

PC Bryan Dutton said: “We do not work with this company and aren’t aware of them working with schools in Cheshire. We also do not support or affiliate ourselves to any companies which cold call businesses or members of the public.

“If you receive a call requesting money and you cannot verify who they are then we would advise you don’t give out any bank details, funds or personal details."

Any suspicious calls can be reported to Trading Standards or Action Fraud http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/
