Residents urged to remain vigilant following car and key burglaries in Northwich Date published: 25th April 2018 2.34pm

Officers from Northwich Local Policing Unit are urging residents to remain vigilant following a spate of car and key burglaries.

Since the start of April officers have received four separate reports of burglaries in the Northwich area where offenders have forced entry into the premises in a deliberate attempt to steal car keys. Of those the suspects have been successful on three occasions.

The suspects have used a variety of techniques to gain entry into the homes, including via insecure windows and doors, smashing windows and using drills to snap locks.

The latest incident occurred during the early hours of Wednesday 25 April when offenders forced entry into a house on Prichard Drive, Davenham, and stole two Volkswagen Golfs.

Detective Sergeant Simon Parker said: “Enquiries are currently ongoing, and while this work takes place I urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the team here at Northwich on 101.

“It’s also important that residents keep their homes secure at all times - ensuring that keys are always store out of sight – helping to reduce their chances of becoming a victim.

“I’d also advise residents to look at what extra security measures they could use to make their homes more secure.”

There are a number of simple steps that residents can take to keep their homes secure and reduce their chances of becoming a victim, including:

  • Ensure that all windows are closed and doors are locked, even when you are at home or in the garden.
  • Use security devices, such as steering locks, to keep vehicles secure.
  • Never leave your car keys, or house keys, on display, near a door or window.
  • Use the security measures on modern windows, which allow them to let some air in but still be locked.
    • Keep all valuables out of the line of sight of prying eyes.
    • Never put car keys or purses on window sills or in view of a window or door.
  • Always avoid keeping large amounts of cash in your house.
  • If you are replacing or fitting new doors and windows, get ones that are certified to British Standard BS7950 (windows) or PAS 24-1 (doors)
  • Use security devices, such as steering locks, to keep vehicles secure.
  • Fit mortise locks (Kitemarked BS3621) to all front and back doors and locks to all downstairs windows or windows which are easy to reach.
  • Fit a burglar alarm, but make sure it is installed properly and works.
  • Keep your garage and garden shed locked with proper security locks, and keep any tools secure and out of sight.
